Impact of ISO 9001 Certification in ASIAN countries

Impact of ISO 9001 Certification in Developing Asian Economies

09/11/2009

On 26 Oct 2009, a seminar on “The impact of ISO 9001 Certification in Developing Asian Economies” was held by STANDARDS MALAYSIA and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Putrajaya, Malaysia. At the seminar, UNIDO Trade Capacity Building Branch Lead Consultant, Dr. Nigel H. Croft revealed that UNIDO together with ISO, IAF and the local accreditation body, STANDARDS MALAYSIA have embarked on a research project to study the impact of the ISO 9001 certification in the developing Asian economies of Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

The project aimed to answer the following key questions:-
(1) Are organizations in Asian developing countries deriving tangible benefits through ISO 9001 certification?
(2) Are Certification Bodies carrying out the certification process effectively?
(3) Are the various expectations of different stakeholders being met?

Phase 1 of the project started in Sep 2009 with the development of a Customer Satisfaction Survey Questionnaire. A full survey will be conducted in 3rd Quarter 2009 of selected certified organizations in each of the ten countries to evaluate the perspective of certified organizations concerning reasons for certification, costs, benefits and satisfaction with consultants and Certification Bodies.

Phase 2 in early 2010 will involve 700 visits by UNIDO appointed consultants to certified organizations in the ten countries. In Malaysia, UNIDO has targeted to make visits to about 100 major certified organizations. In these visits, UNIDO will hold discussion with senior management, verify the certification process and make a high-level verification of system effectiveness. LRQA clients should not be surprised if we call you to inform of such visits by UNIDO. The results of these visits will be highly confidential.

Phase 3 in late 2010 will see UNIDO publishing the final report of the study to all interested parties through an international seminar and workshops in each of the participating countries.
